The lone tree standing in the field was considered sacred. As the animals had not eaten it as a sapling, it was believed to be protected by the fairy folk. These trees were considered wishing trees. A ritual formed around these trees, where people would focus on what they desired, while typing a rag onto the tree, making sun wise circles and chanting prayers. Indeed these wishing trees are still to be seen in parts of rural Ireland today. They are held in great esteem by the local people, as, it is thought that any harm done to them will surely end in misfortune.
